Art & Science —
Bridging the gap between art and science.

The Art & Science program by the AVL Cultural Foundation offers artists an unparalleled opportunity to connect with AVL technology. By partnering on joint projects, artists gain valuable insights from AVL, while AVL's scientists and engineers benefit from the artist's point of view. This unique collaboration challenges and shifts the perspectives of both parties, sparking new approaches.

As a discipline without a defined goal, art thrives on experimenting with open-ended outcomes. Embracing this openness and drawing strength from it is intrinsic to the artistic process. At the AVL Cultural Foundation, we understand that fostering a spirit of innovation – not achieving a specific end result – is the true purpose of our interdisciplinary projects. We create an environment in which art, science, and technology come together.

Since our foundation in 2007, we have undertaken numerous projects that occupy the space where these three disciplines connect: With an interdisciplinary team, we set out on a journey of artistic and technological experimentation, leading to the development of the Irvine, a one-of-a-kind analogue synthesizer that uses AVL-developed gallium phosphate crystals as its unique sound source. The immersive music installation Symphony of Encounters uses AVL sensor technology to detect movements that trigger melodies, reflecting the visitor’s presence. With speeds reaching 120 km/h, the AVL wind tunnel was the ideal setting for dancers to depict the human struggle with technology and emotion in Winding. For the video Dance with Technology a dancer performs an experimental dance in AVL RACETECH biometrics, typically used for driver evaluation.
